Every year, millions of New Yorkers are ticketed for a variety of traffic offenses. However, some types of traffic tickets are more common than others. Here are seven of the most common reasons that people receive traffic tickets:
- Speeding
- The most common reason people are ticketed is speeding. Approximately 40 million of these tickets are handed out across the US every year. Speeding violations in New York carry large fines and points on your license. Points for speeding ranged from 3 – 11 points based on how fast over the speed limit the officer claims you were going. Tickets alleging more than 40 MPH over the speed limit can result in an automatic suspension of your license.
- Failing to stop at a stop sign or red light
- Another common ticket comes from people failing to come to a complete stop at stop signs or red lights. These violations can carry large fines and will result in points on your license.
- Driving without a valid license
- A surprising number of tickets come from people driving without a valid license. This includes people whose license has been suspended or revoked, as well as people who never passed their test to get a driver’s license in the first place. Driving with a suspended license is a crime in New York and you can be charged with a misdemeanor or felony depending on the circumstances.
- Driving with an expired registration
- In a similar way, a shocking number of tickets comes from people driving without a valid registration for their vehicle.
- Improper signaling
- Another common reason for people to get traffic tickets comes from them failing to properly signal when turning or changing lanes. Not only is this illegal, it can potentially increase the risk of an accident as other vehicles may not realize when you are attempting to turn or change lanes.
- Texting/Using a Mobile Device while driving
- Texting or using a mobile device while driving is a common ticket. These tickets come with major fines and can result in up to 5 points on your license.
