Every day, millions of people across New York State depend on their ability to drive to go to work, do errands, and generally accomplish the things they need to do to live. However, this can get thrown into chaos if your driver’s license is suspended. So what should you do if you find yourself with a suspended license?
What Does it Mean to Get a Suspended License?
When a person’s driver’s license is suspended, it means they have temporarily lost the privilege to drive. While under the effects of a suspension, a person cannot legally drive any vehicle, and can face criminal and financial penalties if they are caught driving with a suspended license.
What Are the Two Types of Suspensions?
When a person’s license is suspended, it can either be a definite suspension or an indefinite suspension. A definite suspension is one with a defined end-point, usually six months or a year, and is typically handed down at the same time the suspension is declared. An indefinite suspension, on the other hand, has no defined endpoint, and only ends when the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) determines that a person should once again be allowed to drive.
How Can Your License Be Suspended?
A person’s license can be suspended for any number of reasons. Most often suspensions are a result of failing to answer traffic tickets or failing to pay fines. Other suspensions or revocations may result from serious traffic offense, such as speeding more than forty miles over the speed limit, driving without insurance, more than 11 points in an 18 month period, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Your license can also be suspended for failing to file an accident report after a motor vehicle accident, failing to pay taxes, or failing to pay child support.
What Should You Do?
Your license can be suspended for a multitude of reasons and can be difficult to lift on your own. It is important to hire an experienced traffic attorney to assist you in getting the suspensions lifted.
